The unmet need
Preterm birth: when every extra day matters
Around 1 in 10 babies worldwide is born preterm. In 2020, an estimated 13.4 million babies were born before 37 weeks of gestation. The earlier a baby is born, the greater the risk of serious complications affecting the lungs, brain, gut, eyes and other developing organs. In acute preterm labor, every additional day in utero can matter.
Yet current treatment is primarily focused on gaining a short window of time — typically around 48 hours — to administer antenatal corticosteroids and, when needed, transfer the mother to an appropriate center of neonatal care.
At Gesthera, we believe it is time to explore what more effective and sustained pregnancy prolongation could make possible.
Our lead program
GST001: a different approach to tocolysis
GST001 is an orally available small molecule and a selective antagonist of the prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) receptor, also known as the FP receptor.
Rather than broadly suppressing prostaglandin synthesis, GST001 selectively targets a specific pro-labor pathway involved in uterine activation and labor.
GST001 has demonstrated clinical proof of concept in acute preterm labor and is being developed for women experiencing acute preterm labor before 32 weeks of gestation.
Our ambition is twofold: to improve the efficacy of acute tocolysis and to explore whether sustained pregnancy prolongation beyond the conventional 48-hour treatment window could ultimately translate into better outcomes for babies at risk of being born too soon.
